Save the Dance Hall Society

Fabric the Music Project — Annals of creation, when the clouds part and muses align with free time (unlike the music itself, which is watertight). For sleuths, there are a few fabric clues scattered around the web, related to Summon These Days and Chasing Sun.

Save the Dance Hall Society is a song that I worked on with with Nils (d), Ian (g), and Nimrod (g) in the studio at Strawberry Jams in Quezon in late September, 2018. Two different sessions, if memory recollects.

The opening Save the Dance Hall Society part came in April, 2018, just after arriving in Boracay, about the time that closure was announced. I was trying to craft something that would meet Merry Ann’s approval. A proximate influence was Sergeant Pepper’s, which I was discovering anew at the time. If this is a groovy era McCartney/Lennon composition, so be it, though the lyrics are more pointed than obtuse.

The You’ve Got Me Running, Running part, no idea where that came from, I think it’s related to early reggae and a classic Boracay beach sound. The Hidden Traffic part came from Van Morrison’s Bang Records quicksilver version of Beside Me.

You breathe out you breathe in, you breathe out and the freedom of it all…

The Under Surveillance part — well that’s difficult to describe, unless you are witnessing a device n’ drone-enabled state apparatus being set up. It owes equal parts to early Harry Nilsson and early Police––plus that Fabric special sauce that comes from putting great musicians gently, yet firmly, on the spot.

Speaking of which, the Under Surveillance part of the song was first attempted with Nimrod and Nils at Strawberry. It was a nice jam….

It was ultimately redone with Ian and Nils, with all the parts kind of pieced together spontaneously, in the studio at Strawberry over the course of 2–3 hours. We also recorded lengthy parts for things like Like a Ghost and Slowly Learning at that session and may have come up with a new song or two.

This session was a first, in terms of disciplined learning and recording of a complex song with multiple sections, in real time. Nils drove me to take this approach and it worked (somehow).

Still have not gotten around to listening to and arranging that week’s worth of material. Almost afraid to….
