I have been writing content far longer than I imagined, not because it is glamorous or particularly well paid, but because it is office-free. I visited the headquarters of Medium nearly a year ago and realized they had no physical public interface at all. The pointed words I had about valuing quality content in a white walled cargo elevator may have struck home, there is now a paywall which presumably means payment at some point. Though, your article notwithstanding, I see little on Medium that is particularly well written. The idea I am toying with and implementing now is the serial cloud novel.
